Jack Gibson's Fur Coat

Rugby league oddities and artefacts

Published by Gelding Street Press

About The Book

If rugby league buried a time capsule Jack Gibson's fur coat would be the first item placed inside - if you could solve the mystery of its whereabouts.
League's precious artefacts include Thurston's headgear, Langland's white boots, Reggie the Rabbit's tail and a snag from the Dragon's season-ending BBQ. Or you could fill it with stories of players who were poisoned, didn't show for the grand final or took the field drunk.
In Jack Gibson's Fur Coat, Glen Humphries tells the stories that live on the margins. You simply couldn't make up rugby league's best yarns.

About The Author

Glen Humphries is a journalist with the Illawarra Mercury, during which time he has covered pretty much everything - except sport, oddly enough. As a writer and author, he has won several awards, including Beer Writer of the Year and a Sydney local history prize. He also writes his own books at Lastdayofschool.net. He's a lifelong rugby league tragic. While he has played 'league', he's never been involved in any onfield biff - hardly surprising considering he last played the sport in primary school. The 1970s is his favourite decade of rugby league: heavy leather footballs; players with enormous masses of facial hair and black goo under the eyes; sandboys, ankle-high football boots and daytime grand finals. He lives in Wollongong with his wife, daughter and an exceptionally needy staffie cross. His previous books for Gelding Street Press include Biff: Rugby League's infamous fights, Jack Gibson's Fur Coat and Sticky Wickets: Australian cricket's controversies and curiousities.
