About The Book

From Lab Discovery to Market Impact—Know What It Really Takes

Academic research is a powerful source of innovation, but turning a discovery into a real-world product is a complex process. From Lab to Launch gives scientists, inventors, and innovators a clear, candid look at how to navigate that path.

Davis Farmer draws on decades of experience in biotech startups, licensing, and global dealmaking to help researchers understand what to expect when science meets business.

You’ll learn:
  • How to approach invention disclosure and intellectual property
  • What tech transfer offices actually do, and how to work with them
  • When it makes sense to launch a company, and how to build one that lasts
  • Why most startups fail, and how to avoid common traps
  • What role you should play in the process, and how to choose wisely

Whether you're licensing an invention, starting a venture, or advising someone who is, this guide brings clarity to a high-stakes journey.

Raves and Reviews

"I first met Davis when he worked with us at the UK Medical Research Council in the mid-1990s. For more than three decades since, he has been a driving force in the world of academic spin-outs.

What truly sets Davis apart is not only his deep worldwide knowledge of the interface between industry and academic research, but his extraordinary gift for solving problems at this interface. His success stems from the affection he inspires and his strategic insights and uncanny instinct in identifying technologies with real potential. Any reader will understand why Davis has become an invaluable friend. I cannot recommend him as a mentor highly enough."
Christopher Hentschel, PhD
Former Head, MRC Collaborative Center and Malaria Medical Ventures

"What a remarkable book! Nothing like it has been done before, and it will be an invaluable part of my library. I have personally travelled the journey that Farmer describes multiple times and often reflect on the recipes for successes and failures in my experience and share these with colleagues, founders, and first-time CEOs. My insights, shaped by over twenty-five years in biotech, might have been foreshortened and facilitated if I had Farmer’s book earlier. Farmer and I worked together on several ventures, and he knows what he’s talking about! The anecdotes in the book are enormous fun and provide great insights."

Managing Partner & Chief Scientist, Quigley BioPharma; Former Division Director, CDC and USAMRIID; Partner, Kleiner, Perkins Caufield & Byers Pandemic Fund

"Davis Farmer is that rare individual who can understand science and apply that understanding to evaluating the commercial opportunity the science represents. Equally important—he can relate to both inventors and investors to help realize that opportunity.

I have worked with Davis for more than thirty years. During that time, we started a number of companies and closed a number of deals in the biomedical space. It has been a rewarding experience."
Jerry Balter
Cofounder & Managing Partner, the Ulysses Advisory Group; Former Manager, the New Zealand Seed Fund

"Having worked with Davis to create university spin-outs and later on governance boards, I am impressed by his ability to adeptly embrace and guide the unique process of commercializing intellectual property. His relationship skills, in particular his genuine interest and empathy for researchers’ objectives, coupled with his understanding of the requirements of investors, brings a clear and strategic approach to project leadership. Davis was a pleasure to work with; his way of working gave me confidence as head of the tech, transfer office."
Colin Dawson BVSc, MBA, CFinsD
Former CEO, Otago Innovation Tech, Transfer Office

"My friend and business partner, C. Davis Farmer, Jr., has a unique way of treating people, seeing the world, and navigating the inevitable challenges of building a successful life science start-up.

I worked with Davis for over a decade in two ventures and constantly admired his friendliness, kindness, and generosity. As Board Chairman, he would spend his lunch hours reading Winnie-the-Pooh to an employee working to improve his English so he could read the book to his son. He hosted themed dinners for the team and organized unforgettable retreats at his summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee, even flying the national flag of each guest. This genuine care for people has been central to his success in negotiations and in shaping diverse, strong-willed founders into principled, mission-driven teams.

Davis’s perspective is equally distinctive. An avid student of art who has visited nearly every major museum in the world, he once told me his favorite painter was J. M. W. Turner —an inspired, unconventional choice that reflects his own forward-looking sensibility. His office walls are covered with photographs he has taken around the world, and he delights in turning them into puzzles for visiting partners, breaking the ice with curiosity and playfulness. In tense startup moments, he often invokes the old British principle, 'innocent until proven guilty,' diffusing blame and redirecting energy toward solutions. That instinct—to preserve dignity while pressing forward—builds loyalty and camaraderie.

And then there are his stories. He’s witty, improbable, and always instructive. No matter the subject, his moral is simple and unmistakable: never stop trying. In this book, Davis shares the mindset behind turning novel scientific ideas into thriving companies. Read it, and you’ll understand why working with him has been both a privilege and an education."

"I first met Davis thirty-five years ago after being recruited by the UK Medical Research Council to develop a more effective technology transfer function. Access to his expertise and experience proved extremely helpful. I learned a lot. In addition to his wealth of relevant knowledge, Davis’ personal style demonstrated a constructive approach alongside key skills needed in negotiation between the different worlds of academic researchers and investors."
Dr. David Owen, FRSB, OBE
Former CEO, Medical Research Council Technology Ltd.

"Innovation has powered humanity’s greatest advances, and today academic research drives much of this progress, turning bold ideas into discoveries that reshape society. This book offers a clear, comprehensive roadmap for transforming academic science into a start-up—from the first spark of invention through the hard realities of building, funding, and ultimately exiting a company—while preparing founders, investors, collaborators, and tech-transfer professionals for the hurdles and high failure rates inherent in this journey. For anyone considering launching, joining, or supporting a science-based venture, this guide is an indispensable place to start."

"Davis and I worked side by side to set-up Pacific Edge Ltd., a publicly listed cancer diagnostics company originally spun out of the University of Otago in New Zealand. Davis was remarkably knowledgeable about all aspects of company start up, ranging from staff job descriptions to laboratory fit-out and recruitment of the Scientific Advisory Board. Davis’ magic was his ability to work with people from all walks of life, to build cohesive teams, and distill the essence of meaningful new biotechnology ventures."
