More Than Bombs and Bandages

Australian Army Nurses at Work in World War I

Published by Big Sky Publishing
Distributed by Simon & Schuster

About The Book

More than Bombs and Bandages exposes the false assumption that military nurses only nursed. Based on author Kirsty Harris' CEW Bean Prize winning PhD thesis, this is a book that is far removed from the 'devotion to duty' stereotyping offering an intriguing and sometimes gut wrenching insight into the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) during World War I.

About The Author

Kirsty Harris completed her labour history thesis on World War I nursing at the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne in 2007. With a military background, she has created a detailed view of the work that Australian Army nurses undertook during the war, particularly outside the nursing sphere. This allows both those inside and outside the nursing world to gain a better appreciation of the work these nurses did and the skills they had.
